Few places in the U.S. love dogs as much as Carmel-by-the-Sea. Nestled along the Monterey Peninsula, this coastal village isn’t just dog-friendly — it’s dog-forward. From legendary hotels once owned by famous animal lovers to off-leash beaches and city-sponsored recognition of dog-centered art and writing, Carmel has built a reputation as one of the most dog-friendly towns in California.

A Town That Celebrates Dogs, and the People Who Love Them

The existence of a city-sponsored prize celebrating dog-related creativity says everything about how central dogs are to life here. In fact, Carmel’s dog-friendly culture runs so deep that it even shows up in the arts. For example, I was honored to win a Pawlisher Prize for a short story I wrote: an award presented by the City.

It’s rare to find a destination where dogs are not only allowed but actively celebrated.

The Cypress Inn: Doris Day’s Dog-Loving Legacy Lives On

One of Carmel’s most iconic dog-friendly landmarks is the Cypress Inn, a historic boutique hotel once co-owned by legendary actress and animal welfare advocate Doris Day.

Why the Cypress Inn Is a Favorite Among Dog Lovers (including Seven and me)

Thanks to Doris Day’s early influence, the Cypress Inn became and remains one of the most dog-friendly hotels in Carmel-by-the-Sea and is a must-stay for visitors traveling with dogs.

Carmel Beach: An Iconic Off-Leash Dog Beach in California

Carmel Beach is consistently ranked among the best dog-friendly beaches in California. A single visit makes it clear why. Just look at the photo in this post of Seven standing proudly on a rock, soaking it all in. After his brief modeling moment, he took off, joyfully running leash-free along the wide expanse of soft white sand. As for me, I couldn’t get enough of the sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean. (Nearly as handsome as my boy, though not quite.)

Located at the end of Ocean Avenue, Carmel Beach is easy to find and impossible not to love. It’s a true social hub for dogs and humans alike, where sunset often brings the sound of waves, laughter, and the joyful thunder of paws racing along the shoreline.

Scenic Path & Carmel Beach

Running parallel to Carmel Beach, Scenic Road meanders along the coastline and features a packed-dirt path ideal for joggers, on-leash dog walkers, and sightseers. Spanning from Carmel Beach to Carmel River Beach, the Scenic Road path offers some of the area’s most memorable views, including Carmel Point, Point Lobos State Reserve, Pebble Beach Golf Links, and the area’s iconic Cypress trees set against a white-sand shoreline.

Mission Trails Park: A Quieter Off-Leash Escape

For a change of pace from the beach, Mission Trails Park offers a serene, nature-filled experience. This 37-acre park features California coastal native vegetation, open meadows, a dense Monterey Pine forest, and a peaceful grove of oak trees.

There are two entrances to the park: one east of downtown on Mountainview Avenue and the other on Rio Road, across from the Carmel Mission. Dogs are welcome off leash here as well, provided they remain under voice control and follow posted park rules. It’s a favorite spot for dogs who enjoy sniffing, exploring, and stretching their legs away from the shoreline.

Annual Dog Events in Carmel-by-the-Sea

Carmel doesn’t just welcome dogs, it hosts parties for them.

Carmel Poodle Day

The most famous dog-centered event is Carmel Poodle Day, a beloved gathering where poodles and poodle mixes take over Carmel Beach for a joyful, photo-worthy celebration. The event draws locals and visitors alike and has become a signature expression of the community’s playful dog culture.

Beyond Poodles

While Poodle Day may be the most famous breed-focused gathering, Carmel’s dog culture extends far beyond a single event. Informal beach meetups, seasonal celebrations, and nearby dog-friendly happenings throughout the Monterey Peninsula ensure that dogs of all breeds are welcomed and celebrated year-round.

Dog-Friendly Dining & Shopping in Carmel

Carmel-by-the-Sea is famously accommodating when it comes to dog-friendly restaurants and shops.

It’s completely normal to see dogs lounging beneath café tables or strolling the storybook streets alongside their people.
