Sipping With Furry Friends in Central California Wine Country
Wine tasting with your dog in San Luis Obispo (SLO) County is one of the easiest ways to combine two of life’s great pleasures — exploring beautiful vineyards and adventuring with your best friend. Before Paige Turner joined our family, Seven was my one-and-only road-trip co-pilot, and he still takes his job very seriously. Together, we set off on a rainy weekend to discover the most dog-friendly wineries in SLO.

Even under heavy gray skies, SLO County was stunning. Rolling green hills, coastal mists, and vineyards stretching toward the horizon — the kind of scenery that slows your heartbeat in the best way. The Central Coast is famously relaxed, and that welcoming spirit extends to four-legged visitors. Many tasting rooms here offer water bowls, treats, shady patios, and genuine dog-loving staff. Rumor has it, locals have even spotted wine-tasting cats…and the occasional llama showing off perfect manners.
Favorite Dog-Friendly Wineries and Their Tasting Rooms
Here are the highlights from our weekend of wine, rain, and wet-paws-approved hospitality.
A Peaceful Escape in Edna Valley – Chamisal Vineyards
San Luis Obispo, CA
Just ten minutes from downtown SLO, Chamisal Vineyards offers a serene escape centered around sustainability and exceptional Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. We sampled the 2016 Califa Chardonnay — peach, Bosc pear, honeysuckle, and a whisper of crème brûlée — while Seven made friends within minutes. A little girl gently pet him throughout her parents’ tasting flight, and Seven basked in the extra love.
Boutique Paso Robles Warmth – Venteux Vineyards
Templeton, CA
Family-owned and deeply connected to the land, Venteux Vineyards is a gem in the Willow Creek district. Their approach — dry farming, natural fermentation, native yeasts — creates wines full of character. Rain kept us indoors, but no one complained. Seven found a wine-barrel dog bed (instant nap), and guests stopped by to say hello between pours. The 2015 Grenache stole our hearts with its delicate, elegant balance.
Iconic Paso Robles Favorite – Castoro Cellars
Templeton, CA
Castoro Cellars is one of the most beloved dog-friendly wineries in the region, and it shows. With sweeping vineyard views, picnic-perfect lawns, and a friendly team, it’s a paradise for pups. Seven got his own “tasting” of treats, posed proudly on a wine barrel, and zoomed happily through the mist. Their lineup from Zinfandel to Tempranillo to bright whites is consistently outstanding. The brandy is worth taking home.

Rustic Paso Robles Charm – Four Lanterns Winery
Paso Robles, CA
Along West Highway 46, Four Lanterns Winery offers an intimate, boutique tasting experience inside a barn-inspired room that feels instantly cozy. Their estate-grown Rhone and Bordeaux varietals shine, especially the 2015 Firelight Syrah — earthy, balanced, velvety, and unforgettable. Seven and Bear collected compliments while we sipped.
Coastal Elegance in Cambria – Cutruzzola Vineyards
Cambria, CA
Cambria’s tasting room for Cutruzzola Vineyards is tucked among pine trees with ocean breezes drifting through — quintessential Central Coast magic. We savored the 2013 Gloria Estate Pinot Noir with its cherries, plums, spice, and silky tannins. Seven and Bear stretched out on the cool floor, happy as clams while we explored the flight.

Cambria Classic – Madeline’s Restaurant & Wine Cellar
Cambria, CA
Before 5 p.m., this beloved Cambria spot welcomes polite pups at the bar for wine tasting. Owner Jeff Branco’s selections lean elegant and expressive. The Petit Verdot, with notes of berries, violets, lavender, smoked meat, and warm vanilla, was a standout.
